Cultural Probe Out - Interviews In

Hi,

I've thought of some interview questions that directly relate to parts of our design, a cultural probe wouldn't be able to give us this level of detail.

Please send through more questions as you think of them.

Branding:

- You have 10 logos in front of you please choose 5 and write down as many words as you can that you associate with that logo, an example is provided.
- Please order them from most 'prestige' to least
- Please order them from most 'fun' to least
- Please order them from most 'creative' to least

Map:

- You are to take the map given to you and complete the tour listed on it.
- As you complete the tour, please try to keep track of the environmental elements you use in your journey to help you find your way around, such as street signs, landmarks etc

- Was the map confusing in anyway?
- Did you get lost?
- Did you need to map to find the places listed? If you did, what proportion of the time do you think you used the map?
- Are there any aspects of the map that could be clearer?
- What is your comfort level with using the map? Scoring from 1-10, 1 being completely uncomfortable, 10 being extremely comfortable.
- Would you use this map again?
- Would you recommend this map to your friends?

System:

- Does the idea of expert/celebrity recommendations of cultural places and events appeal to you?
- Would you be interested in walking tours recommended by experts or celebritites?
- Who would you like to see recommend a tour?

- Are you comfortable with using vending machines?
- Do you like the idea of maps being available in vending machines?
- Do you think the system described would benefit from having an information booth included?

Design Responsibilities

Hi,

Now that we've defined our idea further we can break the design into five manageable areas, each matching our abilities.

These are:

A. The hub (Interior Design)
B. Map (Comm design)
C. Machines and packaging templates(Ind Design)
D. Magazine and Promotional material (Comm design)
E. Online presence (MMD)

This doesn't exactly match our group's backgrounds, so we'll have to discuss tonight who is best suited to each section. Of course most of the design work will be done by all of us discussing and refining our ideas, this might be a good way to make sure everyone knows what their responsibilities are.

Can everyone think about which part they would be best suited to tackling?

Name Ideas

Hi,

I was thinking of names that were more descriptive, like:

Creativend
"Packages of creative genius"
"Those in the know show you were to go"

Artvend
"Refreshing recommendations"

Artsnacks
"Fill up on art"
"Spoon-fed art tours"
"Art tours good enough to eat"

Vend-a-map
"Your personal art guide to Melbourne"
"Your personal art guides"

Expert-vend
"The art expert for your pocket"

Fame-map
"Famous people - favourite places"

Hopefully we'll settle on something tonight.

the new identity of melbourne

As John told us about the new icon of Melbourne yesterday, i have found some information about why it is in the colour. i think our colour should be related to this.

“The ‘M’ design will become an icon for Melbourne, synonymous with the modern, vibrant, cool city Melbourne is today and will continue to be in the future.

“The new identity will deliver more impact, be stronger, more flexible and reduce confusion as to who is delivering services. It will build greater long term identification and align with best practice around the world.”

“The new brand is strong and leading edge and will be instantly recognised as belonging to the City of Melbourne.”

Thursday, September 17, 2009

Hi,

I had an idea overnight that we might look into. There have been different artist led movements in the last few years that take a certain shape or form and then customise it, like the cows in Zurich and the bears in Berlin:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CowParade

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Buddy_Bears

More recently there have been popular culture versions of these movemetns such as the customisation of plastic toys like the Munny dolls and even game consoles such as Gameboys.

Perhaps we can use a similar idea to entice people to use our system, have the maps and the way they are packaged customised by artists/designers and vended from machines, possibly in a custom made can (like a soft drink), or bag (like potato chips) so that a standard vending machine can be used.

This might be a way to make the system more personal and appealing, as our research has shown us that we need something other than the genre/time appeal for people to be involved.

We can discuss tonight.

John

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

Hi,

Thanks for posting the brand info Jen.

I've sent out the focus group report, please read and add in anything I might have missed, I'm sure there is something.

I think we need to develop some new ideas for our project, especially since our research uncovered that people don't search by genre and time. So what can we use to entice them to interact with the system?

The idea of maps and tours created by artists came to mind when we were talking about a celebrity equivalent of our brand, and possibly having the nodes we design customised by artists also will add that element of diversity to the project that we are looking for.

This might be a way forward?

Anyone else have any ideas?

anything about Branding?

HK STYLE ART

Hi all,

Have a look of this site which is a design studio, called "graphicairline", created by Hong Kong people.
There art and design is quite interesting .

Memes

Hi guys,

I've come across the concept of the 'Meme' which might be interesting for our project.

The Wikipedia definition is:

A meme (pronounced /ˈmiːm/, rhyming with "cream"[1]) is a postulated unit or element of cultural ideas, symbols or practices, and is transmitted from one mind to another through speech, gestures, rituals, or other imitable phenomena.

The idea of information transmittance and mutation could help us develop a system that evolves over time with users input or imitation of other users.

Have a look at the below link for an essay on Memes and Art:

http://blog.ivanpope.com/awol/2004/06/the_art_meme.html

The idea is that memes act like genes, or viruses, moving and mutating through a population.

Could be interesting........

art talk

there is a system called 'Art Talk' in Philadelphia.

"Individuals who can no longer visit the Museum due to age-related limitations or disabilities can still experience the excitement of a lively conversation about works of art. Art Talk links ten to fifteen participants in their homes with a Museum or Park House Guide on a FREE conference call through a regular phone line, providing an ideal way for art lovers to connect. You can participate in the conversation or just listen, and you do not need an art background to enjoy Art Talk. A booklet will be sent to you to view objects as you listen and discuss them."

The art talk can bring everyone together and sharing art.

Lit Rev Draft

Hi,

Thanks Kelly for posting the minutes of our meeting yesterday.

I have sent to your email addresses the Lit Review that I've compiled from our research.

I think we still have a long way to go before this is presentable, so can everyone please read it carefully and include more information, edit it as is required and make any suggestions by tomorrow afternoon? I will check my email at 5pm and bring all suggestions to class for us to discuss.

I have done my best to combine our research but there are still gaps as I haven't received summaries or comparisons from everyone yet. Rachel and Daniella can you please send me any more articles on your topic that you have found and the summary information we need to be combined into the final document.

I have highlighted the questions we are investigating in red and any information that will likely need to be changed or deleted in blue.

We will also need someone to spend some time writing the bibliography and making sure all the references are to the Harvard standard. I've kept track of the references so far but there is still a lot of work to be done on this. Volunteers?

Please also start to think about the design aspect of this project as we are going to have to start preparing some concepts this week to test.

See you tomorrow, please try and have more information to me by tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks,

John

meeting Minutes

Group meeting: 29/08/09 wk3

Location: RMIT library

Attendees: Jen, John, Kelly, Rachel

Jen and John brought with the idea on gather the articles into one document.

Jen, John, Kelly and Rachel have done the interviews and summaries of articles.

We discussed the structures of the literature review on meeting and link all articles together. We identify the existing problem based on the interviews, finding the solution to comfort customers and hearing the opinions about what they need.

We also discussed how to let people know about our system, such as, poster with abstract icon and interest to read, discussion board, postcard, use the abstract element to connect our brand and system.

We have to compare the points of articles and look at if they are overlap or opposite also, link the paragraphs together and send it to John by Sunday.

Lit rev Structure

Hi,

Attached is the structure of the Lit Rev that we discussed yesterday.

As we decided, can everyone please send through your summaries and comparisons for me to add into this structure, I'd like to have a complete draft by tonight.

Thanks Kelly for sending yours through, Daniella, can you please send through summaries and comparisons of your articles for me to work into the Lit Rev.

I'll email around my draft later today for everyone to comment on and we can refine it over the week.

See you tomorrow!

Lit Rev Articles

Hi,

I've compiled the articles into one document which I've emailed to you and I've started to link and compare them as best I can.

Can everyone please read over the abstracts by tomorrow (as well as your summaries) and also think of links and comparisons that might be useful?

Daniella can you send through what you have asap so we can add it in?

I think we will have too many articles, but at least it will be easier to get rid of some than try to find more.

Once we have all the summaries and have worked out the structure I'll be able to write the document up and we can all review it before Thursday.

I think we are on track!

Thanks everyone for your input.

John

Lit review

Hi,

If everyone could send me the details and Abstract of the articles we decided to include last night i can get started on forming the lit rev. All you need to do is copy and paste the article details; ISSN, name, etc and the abstract into a word doc, like the one I sent the other day. I am going to start on it about 2pm, so please send them to me by then.

Can you also please start to summarise the articles into at least point form looking at the arguments and conclusions of each, I'll need this by 2pm Saturday.

Daniella, I hope your ankle is OK, please send through what you have asap and we'll see if we can work it into the doc. There must be some literature on Art galleries and public interaction, it's a pretty big industry so maybe focus on the art side rather than the retail side, as the retail research is probably all private and unavailable.

Thanks for all the great work done so far, it was great to see so many good articles last night.

Keep it up!

John

Group meeting on Monday August 24 2009

Group meeting on Monday August 24 2009

Attendees: Daniella, Jen, John, Kelly, Rachel

We discussed how to communicate well between research and design.
While talking about problems, many questions came out so we decided to find a solution though questions.
Also we will ask basic questions of those to interviewees.

Questions:

How do you find/search before you go out

How do you see

How often

How interested

What kind of art do you like/dislike (type)

Who do you with

How do you mix your journey

Pay or Free

...

research checkup.

Trying to find peer reviewed journals on consumer interaction is a bitch!

I found this fantastic journal that I dont think is peer reviewed, and needs to be paid for to get the full article.

But the abstract talks about some brilliant points that would relate really well to our project. I wish I could find out if it is peer reviewed at all or not.

http://www.ingentaconnect.com.ezproxy.lib.swin.edu.au/content/westburn/jmm/2000/00000016/F0030001/art00007

I've printed it out, and I also have all my own literature I've collected from work as well.

How is everyone else going with their research??

Man, I need a coffee!

HDG500-501 Group meeting: 23/08/09 Wk2

HDG500-501 Group meeting: 23/08/09 Wk2

Location: RMIT Library

Attendees: Daniella, Jen, John, Kelly, Rachel

Preliminary research review:
(We had identified a list of keywords for each member to research at the first group based class on the previous Thursday, this preliminary research was aimed at informing the direction and focus of our more detailed research for the Lit Rev.)

Daniella: Customer/public interaction information found

Jen: Melbourne guides relevant to art and other cultural areas found and shown to group, way-finding literature

John: Journal articles relating to interaction with technology, city navigation and pedestrian navigation.

Kelly: Details of galleries and locations, identifying search methods and search durations to locate relevant information

Rachel: Information display and interaction research
Discussion:

We discussed narrowing our research to the most relevant areas.
We wanted to be sure our research could be linked into our design goal and into a cohesive argument.

We discussed our project statement and decided to define it at this stage to inform our research and as we all felt comfortable with how far our discussions and research had progressed.

Project Statement:
We have identified the need for a simple and efficient system for our target market (considering age, gender and culture)to locate and navigate a range of art sites within a defined area of Melbourne, considering their interests and possible time constraints.

We decided on 4 focused areas of research that were relevant to our project that we felt could be linked to provide fertile grounds for a literature review on our subject. We also identified several variables that would be less likely to be informed by a literary review and more likely informed by secondary research.

These 4 areas are:
Information gathering, processing and outputting (interface)
physical manifestation of the system (hub) > <
user navigation maps (outputs)
^
user experience and feed back (usability of navigation info)

We realised that these areas overlap considerably so research will not be clearly divided between the groups, but rather we decided to allocate research topics by analysing the overlap between the topics to ensure we played to our strengths and created a cohesive document. We also decided on one of the team members being the collator of all documentation.

We listed definite research topics to ensure we were not trying to investigate too many disparate areas. The results of this discussion are shown below and research areas are listed by name.

To keep in mind the design goals of the project and to prepare for the design class Monday night, we developed a list of design limitations to align with our project statement and research topics

These covered the ‘who, what, where and when’ details that are required in a design sense to steer the project through the research phase and the beginnings of the design phase.

We ensured we retained several variables to be informed by secondary research, as we are wary of over-prescribing the design outcome at this early phase.
The details of this discussion are detailed below.

We had the following action points from our meeting to be completed by class Thursday:
• Gather literature relating to each topic that has been assigned (including a minimum of 2 Peer reviewed articles).
• Write a summary and analysis of each article gathered.
o Summary:
List main arguments in point form
Re-order arguments in order of importance
Re-write in brief essay form in own words
o Analysis:
Analysis of arguments
Is evidence strong or weak?
Do we agree with arguments?
If not, where do our considerations differ and why, what evidence do we have to the contrary.
• Compare papers in each area if possible:
o Compare summary points
o Are the arguments the same
o Which is stronger?
o Which are emphasised?
o List agreements, and disagreements
o Which is more current or relevant?

http://www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/rsrc/PDFs/ArtsStrategy0405/CM_Art_Strategy_optimum.pdf

The 2004-2007 Arts Strategy was not revised in 2008. During this year, the City of Melbourne was in the process of preparing Future Melbourne, the long-term vision developed by the community for Melbourne to be a bold, inspirational and sustainable city by 2020. The development of a new Arts Strategy was deferred until 2009.

Maybe it not useful but hope we can get some general idea about what s going on n planning in melb.

Hi guys,

Below is the Wikipedia attempt to explain what art is. This is what I've been researching as we need a starting point, which might be the definition of what art is, might not be.

It is interesting that there isn't any concrete definition of what 'art' is. Unlike the other groups (who have easily definable subjects, food, transport, sustainability) we have a chance to explore a very interesting proposition in that every interpretation of our topic is in some way correct, there are no wrong answers to the question: What is art?

I've also found some local sites that might be interesting in out discussions, some are festivals, some are outdoor installations that I like:

Art

Art is the process or product of deliberately arranging elements in a way that appeals to the senses or emotions. It encompasses a diverse range of human activities, creations, and modes of expression, including music, literature, film, sculpture, and paintings. The meaning of art is explored in a branch of philosophy known as aesthetics.
The definition and evaluation of art has become especially problematic since the early 20th century.
Richard Wollheim distinguishes three approaches: the Realist, whereby aesthetic quality is an absolute value independent of any human view; the Objectivist, whereby it is also an absolute value, but is dependent on general human experience; and the Relativist position, whereby it is not an absolute value, but depends on, and varies with, the human experience of different humans. An object may be characterized by the intentions, or lack thereof, of its creator, regardless of its apparent purpose. A cup, which ostensibly can be used as a container, may be considered art if intended solely as an ornament, while a painting may be deemed craft if mass-produced.
Traditionally, the term art was used to refer to any skill or mastery. This conception changed during the
Romantic period, when art came to be seen as "a special faculty of the human mind to be classified with religion and science". Generally, art is made with the intention of stimulating thoughts and emotions.
The nature of art has been described by
Richard Wollheim as "one of the most elusive of the traditional problems of human culture". It has been defined as a vehicle for the expression or communication of emotions and ideas, a means for exploring and appreciating formal elements for their own sake, and as mimesis or representation. Leo Tolstoy identified art as a use of indirect means to communicate from one person to another. Benedetto Croce and R.G. Collingwood advanced the idealist view that art expresses emotions, and that the work of art therefore essentially exists in the mind of the creator. The theory of art as form has its roots in the philosophy of Immanuel Kant, and was developed in the early twentieth century by Roger Fry and Clive Bell. Art as mimesis or representation has deep roots in the philosophy of Aristotle. More recently, thinkers influenced by Martin Heidegger have interpreted art as the means by which a community develops for itself a medium for self-expression and interpretation.

Definition of the term

The most common usage of the word "art," which rose to prominence after 1750, is understood to denote skill used to produce an aesthetic result. Britannica Online defines it as "the use of skill and imagination in the creation of aesthetic objects, environments, or experiences that can be shared with others." By any of these definitions of the word, artistic works have existed for almost as long as humankind: from early pre-historic art to contemporary art; however, some theories restrict the concept to modern Western societies. Much has been written about the concept of "art". Where Adorno said in 1970 "It is now taken for granted that nothing which concerns art can be taken for granted any more[...]," The first and broadest sense of art is the one that has remained closest to the older Latin meaning, which roughly translates to "skill" or "craft," and also from an Indo-European root meaning "arrangement" or "to arrange". In this sense, art is whatever is described as having undergone a deliberate process of arrangement by an agent. A few examples where this meaning proves very broad include artifact, artificial, artifice, artillery, medical arts, and military arts. However, there are many other colloquial uses of the word, all with some relation to its etymology.
The second and more recent sense of the word art is as an abbreviation for creative art or fine art. Fine art means that a skill is being used to express the artist’s creativity, or to engage the audience’s aesthetic sensibilities, or to draw the audience towards consideration of the finer things. Often, if the skill is being used in a common or practical way, people will consider it a craft instead of art. Likewise, if the skill is being used in a commercial or industrial way, it will be considered
Commercial art instead of fine art. On the other hand, crafts and design are sometimes considered applied art. Some art followers have argued that the difference between fine art and applied art has more to do with value judgments made about the art than any clear definitional difference. However, even fine art often has goals beyond pure creativity and self-expression. The purpose of works of art may be to communicate ideas, such as in politically-, spiritually-, or philosophically-motivated art; to create a sense of beauty (see aesthetics); to explore the nature of perception; for pleasure; or to generate strong emotions. The purpose may also be seemingly nonexistent.
Art can describe several things: a study of creative skill, a process of using the creative skill, a product of the creative skill, or the audience’s experience with the creative skill. The creative arts (art as discipline) are a collection of disciplines (arts) that produce artworks (art as objects) that are compelled by a personal drive (art as activity) and echo or reflect a message, mood, or symbolism for the viewer to interpret (art as experience). Artworks can be defined by purposeful, creative interpretations of limitless concepts or ideas in order to communicate something to another person. Artworks can be explicitly made for this purpose or interpreted based on images or objects. Art is something that stimulates an individual's thoughts, emotions, beliefs, or ideas through the senses. It is also an expression of an idea and it can take many different forms and serve many different purposes. Although the application of scientific theories to derive a new scientific theory involves skill and results in the "creation" of something new, this represents science only and is not categorized as art.
